Funding totalling £1.8 million has been secured to help pay for improvements to buildings in and around the Folkestone Creative Quarter.

A partnership of Kent County Council, Shepway District Council and the Creative Foundation has been working for more than a year to raise the cash – which includes a £1.3 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The money will be used to restore building in the old town as well as improve steps and pathways that link the streets in the area.

Councillor Alan Clifton-Holt, Shepway cabinet member for the local economy, said:

“This is fantastic news for Folkestone. This initiative will help to enable much needed repairs and improvements to traditional buildings and will encourage a greater understanding of the history and development of Folkestone, and of the role the old town has played in it.”

Outline plans for the regeneration of Folkestone harbour and seafront approved by Shepway District Council last night could be “truly transformational” for the town.

This is the view of council leader David Monk, who today welcomed the landslide vote in favour of the proposed redevelopment of the waterfront – which could see up to 1,000 homes and numerous business created on the Channel coast. Councillor Monk said:

“Folkestone is becoming the place to be and the place to invest. This prestigious development will increase the pace of Folkestone’s momentum.

“A regenerated Folkestone seafront will bring so much to the town – this application will create new homes, new jobs and new reasons to come and visit Folkestone, and this can only be positive for the local economy.”

Shepway District Council has this evening given its backing to plans for the regeneration of Folkestone harbour and seafront.

Council chief executive Alistair Stewart took to Twitter a short time ago to announce the authority is supporting the vision for the area put forward in a planning application last year.

The proposed redevelopment of the coastal site – which could see up to 1,000 homes built – went before an extraordinary meeting of the council at the Civic Centre in Folkestone tonight. 37 councillors voted in favour of the scheme, one abstained from the vote.

Speaking after the meeting of full council approved the proposed redevelopment, a spokesman for the Folkestone Harbour Company, the group behind the plans, told the Folkestone Herald:

“This is a key step forward and follows three years of extensive public consultation and meticulous planning by a wide range of experts.”
